Natural gas service

The City of Hazard offers natural gas service to homes and businesses. Natural gas is a reliable, lower-carbon fuel for heating, water heating, and cooking. To start service, visit City Hall or see Start or transfer service.

How to recognize a possible gas leak

  • A smell of rotten eggs. Conditions in the pipe or soil can cause the odor to fade, so do not rely on smell alone.
  • A whistling, hissing, or roaring sound near a pipeline.
  • Dead or dying vegetation in an otherwise green area.
  • Dirt, water, or debris being blown into the air.
  • An exposed pipeline after a flood, fire, earthquake, or other disaster.
  • A fire or explosion near a pipeline.

How to respond to a gas leak

  • Immediately evacuate the area.
  • From a safe location, call 911 or the Hazard Police Department at 606-436-2222.
  • Do not operate light switches or any electrical device.
  • Do not use cell phones or other battery-powered devices near the leak. They can spark.
  • Do not light matches.
  • Do not start equipment or vehicles. Leave motorized equipment where it is.

Only turn off your gas if it is safe to do so. The shutoff valve is on the riser pipe between the ground and your meter. An adjustable wrench turns the valve a quarter turn to the off position. If you turn the gas off, leave it off and call City Hall so the service line can be checked before service is restored. The city recommends letting a trained professional perform this task.
